Huacachina is about 5 km from downtown Ica: 12 minutes by taxi from El Huerto. The oasis has a lagoon ringed by palms and dunes over 100 meters tall.
The best buggy and sandboard slot is the 4 pm departure: the heat eases and you finish watching the sunset from the top of a dune. Mornings (8–10 am) are quieter and the sand is cool.
Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, water and clothes you don't mind filling with sand. Leave valuables at the hostel.
